Debbie Umphryes | They did exactly what they said they were going to and did a good job. |
Concerned Citizen | Hi all I wanted to share my experience with Slater Construction owned by John Slater of Bushnell, IL. I purchased my first home a couple years ago and it was a fixer upper to say the least. As soon as the papers were signed i began completely gutting the interior of the home for a complete remodel. Once construction began i realized it was a much larger job than i had anticipated, therefore i ran short on time to work on the roof. The next summer i knew i needed to address the roof as soon as i could. I had just started a new job and did not have any spare time for that large of a project ,so i began calling around to see who replaced roofs locally. I spoke with several different contractors but i really seemed to get the best overall feeling that the job was going to be done and done right by John Slater and did not realize that he would not be on site at all during construction. They were also 2000 more than the other guys but i felt as if i was paying more for a better job. I could not have been more wrong. The tear down crew arrived and the fun began. I have to admit that they were able to get the roof off in record time but.....i ended up with damage to my siding, bushes around my home and they decided to screw plywood to the roof of a 3 season sun room and dump all the weight of the shingles onto the lightly built structurewhich began leaking shortly after. Then the rebuild; and once again i have to say they got it done quickly, however corners were cut, they left more than an inch of shingle beyond the edge of the roof wind would have ripped them off in no time, the flashing and soffit is on but you can clearly see that it was put up in a big hurry, and over half the gutters leak. One gutter is headed downhill the wrong way so that it overflows right in front of my main entrance to my home. Several of the endcaps for the gutters leak enough to create a hole in the ground from leaking so much. Also when they were installing the vents after it had been shingled, i was walking out of my front door when a circular saw fell from the roof landing in the bush next to me. The one employee on site had accidentally cut into the cord powering the saw, when it cut the cord it shot fire and he threw it away from himself tumbling down my roof landing a couple feet from where i was walking. Yes accidents happen but i believe if he would have had someone else present accidents like this could have been prevented. I also was not very comfortable leaving with one guy on my roof, what if he falls and no one is there to help and he cant reach his phone? They also used the bathroom in and around one of my buildings instead of a porta-poddy which seemed unprofessional to say the least. They also helped themselves to apples from my apple tree ran and over a dog dish in my yard and then just threw it in the back of the truck as if i would not realize it was gone. However the biggest issue in my opinion is their overall attitude and lack of professionalism. In the end i payed over 15000 and ended up with leaky gutters damage to my 3 season room, Mcdonalds boxes and wrappers in my attic from their employees lunch breaks, damaged bushes and paid workers to urinate on the side of my building and steal appleswhich is not a huge deal to me but i believe it is worth mentioning. Overall I would highly recommend looking into other options if you are considering Slater Construction. |
James Roe | long story short, very unprofessional and took advantage of my parents. |
